Ferronickel – Product Introduction

Ferronickel is an iron alloy composed primarily of nickel and iron, serving as an essential alloy additive in the steelmaking and foundry industries. Our company specializes in the international trade of ferronickel products, strictly complying with GB/T 25049-2024 Ferronickel and ISO 6501:2020 Ferronickel — Specification and delivery requirements. We offer a wide range of grades and specifications to meet diverse customer requirements.

I. Product Overview

Ferronickel is a nickel-iron alloy containing 20% to 60% nickel, with the main components being nickel and iron, along with small amounts of cobalt, carbon, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, chromium, copper, and other impurities. Ferronickel has a melting point of 1,430–1,480°C and a density of 8.1–8.4 g/cm³.

Ferronickel is primarily used as a nickel additive in steelmaking and cast iron production. In the steel industry, it serves as an alloying element that enhances the flexural strength and hardness of steel. In cast iron, it improves structural uniformity and density. In both liquid and solid states, nickel and iron are completely miscible with each other in any proportion.

Nickel Pig Iron (NPI) is a related product category, traditionally used as a key feedstock in stainless steel production, which accounts for over two-thirds of global nickel demand.

II. Product Classification

Ferronickel is classified by nickel content into the following major grades (in accordance with ISO 6501):

GradeNickel Content RangeKey Characteristics
FeNi2015% – 25%Lower nickel content, cost-effective option
FeNi3025% – 35%Excellent overall performance, widely applicable
FeNi4035% – 45%Higher nickel content, suitable for high-quality steels
FeNi5045% – 60%High nickel content, ideal for premium stainless steels

Additionally, ferronickel is classified by carbon content:

CategoryCarbon Content Range
High Carbon Ferronickel1.0% – 2.5%
Medium Carbon Ferronickel0.030% – 1.0%
Low Carbon Ferronickel< 0.030%

By phosphorus content: Low Phosphorus (P < 0.020%) and High Phosphorus (P < 0.030%).

In the Chinese market, ferronickel is also categorized by smelting equipment:

  • Blast Furnace Ferronickel: Nickel content generally below 8%

  • Electric Furnace Ferronickel: Nickel content generally above 8%

III. Product Grades and Chemical Composition

The following table shows the primary ferronickel grades and their chemical composition (in accordance with ISO 6501 and GB/T 25049-2024):
